Town of Canaan Awarded $307,508.67 from the State of Vermont MERP Grant
The Town of Canaan, VT Town of Canaan, VTjust received some great news today! We were awarded $307,508.67 in MERP Grant Money. This money will be divided between the Town Office and the Alice M. Ward Memorial Library. We will be completing projects that increase our energy efficiency! This was some great news and a long process but I am glad that we were able to secure this funding. It will go a long way in decreasing the tax burden to heat and light these buildings.
Thank you to NVDA, Peder Rude, Isaac Wagner, Cindy Smythe, and everyone else who helped me get this funding!
Below are the projects that will be completed:
The Canaan Alice M. Ward Library upgrades include:
1. HVAC: Replace existing, inefficient, & poorly running fuel oil furnace & cold air handling unit (both at end of useful life) with an electric, ducted, air-source heat pump; Install programmable thermostat; Ventilation system.
2. Other: Replace the old inefficient refrigerator in staff kitchenette; Replace water heater with heat-pump water heater which will help better condition existing space.
3. Envelope: Air seal & insulate upper basement door; Replace lower basement door with insulated door & weather stripping; Remove basement windows; infill, seal, and insulate; Replace inefficient insulation under connector floor and add new foil-faced insulation where appropriate; Insulate under library floors and walls in crawl space to reduce thermal losses due to traditional, laid stone foundation.
The Canaan's Town Office Building upgrades include:
1. HVAC: Heat pump and heat pump hot water systems; Install smart thermostat; Install an ERV.
2. Envelope: Air and thermal barrier upgrades; Increased insulation, including to/around concrete vault, and weatherstripping; The 50+year old, original windows need to be replaced.
3. LED lighting upgrades.
4. Resilience Measures, including 9 kW solar PV and battery storage. There appears to be sufficient space in the mechanical / electrical room to install a 14-kWh battery.

A great event you are not going to want to miss! Come out and support the Canaan Rec Park while also listening to one of the best local bands! Relive your youth with the sweet sound of music from the Shifters.

About the Town of Canaan
The Town of Canaan is a picturesque community located on the Connecticut River in Northeastern Vermont.  It is bordered by New Hampshire and Quebec. Being the most north eastern town in Vermont many consider it to be the "real" Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

Canaan is a great place to live, work and visit.  Its current population of 896 is primarily employed in the tourist, support, and logging industries.  During its 241 year history, Canaan has provided its inhabitants with top notch water and sewer service, roads, schools, libraries and recreational and cultural activities.  The Town of Canaan is tirelessly working on improving the life of each an every one of our citizens, constantly looking at ways to improve our infrastructure.

People in Canaan take pride in their independent nature and "can do" attitude.  The myriad of activities (Moose Festival, softball tournaments, Sugar on Snow social,  historical society, parades, variety shows, dances, American Legion functions, church suppers, etc.) conducted by members of the community demonstrate that given a task they will successfully carry it out with a high degree of confidence and professionalism.  Whether you come to Canaan to visit family/friends, to work, or just passing through, Canaan will truly amaze you.  Canaan is a true example of what a small-town can accomplish.
