CANAAN STUMP DUMP

Stump Dump Facility Location and Scheduled Use

  • Location: South of Canaan on Rte. 102. Formerly the Old Town Dump.
  • Hours of Operation:
  • Opens Saturday May 6, 2023 and  closes October 28, 2023. The hours of operation will be 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
  • Open on the First, Third, and Fourth Saturdays and Second Wednesday of every month between May and October.

  • There will be an operator on site to make sure that we comply with our management plan and to answer any questions about the use of the Stump Dump.
  • The Stump Dump will be locked up at all times other than the scheduled hours of operation.
  • The only exception for the Stump Dump to be open other than the regular schedule is when there is storm damage or as needed by the Town. The operator or road agent will open the stump dump for these emergencies or special events. The individual requesting to have the site opened up for an emergency will have to make the request through the Town office.
  • Any dumping of any waste materials at this site when it is closed will be considered ILLEGAL DUMPING as described in the Town of Canaan Ordinance Regulating the Collection and Disposal of Solid Waste ( Article VI Section 1 and 4). Any person violating this ordinance shall be fined $100.00 for each offense.

Authorized Materials Allowed for Disposal At The Stump Dump:

  • Stumps, brush, untreated wood.

Untreated wood means only clean wood that contains none of the following: paint, adhesive or preservatives. The following are examples of wood products that are not accepted at the stump dump:

Veneers, particle board, treated wood, painted wood, stained wood. Any wood waste that has been treated with a chemical or paint product.

Note: All treated wood is accepted at the Town transfer station.

  • Road, bridge or highway construction debris
  • Concrete, bricks, masonry, mortar. Or other inert materials
  • Lawn and garden wastes. The Town accepts these wastes and we strongly promote composting and urge residents to compost

Canaan Stump Dump Management Plan

The Town of Canaan recognizes the need to provide the residents of the town a place to dispose of clean yard, garden and construction wastes. These wastes are identified in our user requirements. The Town recognizes and takes full responsibility for the management of this site and compliance with all state regulations governing the stump dumps use and burning requirements. The Town realizes that only natural, untreated wood may be burned at the stump dump site located on Rte. 102 in Canaan. The Town recognizes that the open burning of refuse other than natural wood violates the Air Pollution Control Regulations and the Solid Waste Management Rules and that such violations are subject to fines or other enforcement action under Vermont's Uniform Environmental Law Enforcement Act (10 V.S.A. Chapters 201 and 211)

This is the only site that the Town operates as a Stump Dump and the burning of the clean wood waste at this site will be performed by the Town Road Agent or designated person authorized by the Selectboard with permission granted by the Town Fire Warden.

The Stump Dump Planned Use and Management Plan was approved by the Selectboard
