Canaan is the most Northern and Eastern town in Vermont. It covers an area of 20,992 acres and is 1042 feet above sea level. It consists of four villages: Canaan, South Canaan, Beecher Falls and Lake Wallace.

HIGHWAYS

Canaan is located on route 114 and within easy driving distance of Montreal, Quebec, Boston, Massachusetts, Portland, Maine and Burlington, Vermont. It has 17.84 miles of state maintained highways, 2.35 miles of class II roads, 13.93 miles of class III roads and 9.80 miles of class IV roads.

PUBLIC WORKS

An ample supply of metered water with adequate fire flows is available throughout the entire service district. All water is chlorinated and stored in a covered reservoir. The town has a wastewater treatment facility. It also has a transfer station for garbage, which is separated and recycled. For hours of operation, please call the town clerk at 802-266-3370.

UTILITIES

Electricity is available from Vermont Electric Cooperative (800-832-2667 or 802-635-2331). Telephone service is provided by Consolidated Communications (800-585-4466). The local calling area includes Norton and Lemington, Vermont as well as Colebrook, Pittsburg, and Stewartstown, New Hampshire. POST OFFICES

There are two post offices in the town. One is located in Canaan (802-266-3473) and the other in Beecher Falls (802-266-3037).

NEWSPAPERS/TELEVISION

National (USA Today, Boston Globe, etc.), regional (Caledonian Record) and local (News and Sentinel and Colebrook Chronicle) newspapers are available at Solomon’s Store, which is located adjacent to Canaan in West Stewartstown, New Hampshire.
