Fee Charges
Contact the site operator if you have any questions about what goes in any container or what can be recycled. The metal, construction debris, tire and electronic containers can not to be used until you see the site operator. This is to make sure the proper containers are used and the appropriate fees have been paid. We could incur extra charges at the landfills if we do not comply with their requirements.

Canaan Transfer Station Fee Charges

Storage Container - Tires:

  • Disposal Fees:
    • Up to 20"        $3.00
    • 20" to 24"       $6.00
    • All rims must be removed
    • No skidder tires accepted

Storage Container - Electronics:

  • The Canaan Transfer Station is a Vermont E-Waste Recycling Program collection site. E- Vermont's new electronic law bans the landfill disposal of electronic waste. The State provides collection of certain electronics and provides for the disposal.
  •   Televisions, computers, monitors, printers and computer peripherals.

             No charge. There are flyers available at the transfer station for more information on the proper disposal of electronics and protecting your personal data.

   

Vt. Lamp Recycling Program.

  • The following items are accepted at the transfer station. There is no charge to recycle the items listed below. These items will be collected weekly at the transfer station and stored in containers to be shipped to an appropriate approved disposal site. These items contain mercury and are no longer accepted in our regular waste stream or at any landfill.  MUST SEE OPERATOR FOR PROPER DISPOSAL.

                   o   4 & 8 ft. Fluorescent light tubes.

                   o   CFL's (Compact energy efficient bulbs.)
                   o   U-tubes, Circle tubes and HIDs
                   o   Thermometers containing mercury.
                   o   Manometers / barometers containing mercury.
                   o   Household thermostats.
                   o   Button sized batteries. (such as used in watches)

                   o   Batteries - C-D-AA-AAA

Lead acid batteries / No charge.

                   o   Recommend that when you purchase a new battery that you return your old battery to the retail service that you bought the new  battery. This is a service they should provide and you should receive a credit towards the cost of your new battery.

Open Top Container / Construction Debris / Bulky Items:

  •  Disposal Fees:

o   Debris other than sheetrock / shingles.                                  $45.00 cu/yd.

o   Sheetrock and asphalt singles.                                               $75.00 cu/yd.

■       Painted wood, plywood, particle board.

■       Pressure treated, solid insulation, paneling.

■       Wooden doors.

■       Non- asbestos flooring.

•    Site operator will pro rate the charge based on portion of cubic yard being dumped into the container.

o   Sofas containing wood or metal.                                                       $30.00

o   Upholstered chairs/ recliners containing wood or metal.                      $20.00

o   Mattresses / Box springs containing metal or wood.                            $10.00

Note: The above costs can be reduced if you remove all metals and covering materials. The clean wood can go to the stump dump and the metal can go into the metal container and there would be no charge to dispose of these two waste materials. The cloth and filler material can go in the regular trash using a town bag. The above fee charges are to cover the cost if the operator has to strip the items of clean wood and metal. These materials are not allowed in the construction debris container.

o    Room size rugs and carpet foam pads. 8'x10' and larger.  Must be rolled up and tied.                                  $10.00

o   Scatter rugs rolled up. Per rug.                                                                                                                  $ 4.00

o   Vinyl Pools / Tents. Must be rolled up and tied.                                                                                            $ 6.00

o   Sink / Toilet bowl                                                                                                                                      $ 6.00

o   Tub / Shower Stall                                                                                                                                     $10.00

 o   Furniture

Closed Top Container (Compactor):

  •   All household wastes. This waste stream has to be in a town approved blue bag with the town logo.
  •   Cost of town bags: $1.70 per bag. $17.00 per sleeve of 10.
  •    Bags can be purchased at:

                  o   Town Office, Laperle's IGA, Quechee Farms

 

Metal Container:

  • This container is for metals only. There is no charge to use this container.

  • All appliances containing Freon will need to have the Freon removed by a licensed plumber. Appliance will have to be tagged by plumber stating this has been done.

  • All motors will need the fluids removed.

One Container for newspaper only.   

Assigned area for corrugated cardboard. Boxes must being broken down.

Drum for used oil.   Must see operator if you are dropping off motor oil.

Drum for cooking oil. Must see operator if you are dropping off cooking oil.

Light bulbs.   Must see operator for proper storage.

Propane tanks.  Must see operator for proper storage.

Roll off container for:

  • Aluminum cans, plates and baking pans. Tin cans.  Empty aerosol cans.

  • Glass containers. No window glass or dinner ware.

  • Plastic #1 and #2

  • Paint cans/oil based must be empty.  Latex paint must have dried. No liquid residuals allowed.
