Public Announcement/Reminder: Police Coverage

The Town of Canaan contracts with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement services. If you need to report a crime or suspicious activity, please contact the Essex County Sheriff’s Department at (802) 676-3500 or the Vermont State Police at (802) 334-8881. These are the two agencies responsible for providing law enforcement coverage for the Town of Canaan.

Residents are asked not to contact surrounding towns’ police departments, such as the Colebrook or Pittsburg Police Departments, to report incidents occurring in Canaan, as those agencies do not have jurisdiction within the town. When those departments are contacted for incidents within Canaan, the Town may be charged for the services provided, which can result in unnecessary expenses for the municipality.

In the event of an emergency, always dial 911.

Canaan Police Department Disbanded

As many residents know, the Canaan Police Department has been disbanded, and the Town of Canaan no longer employs its own law enforcement officers. Law enforcement services for the town are now contracted through the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.

To report a crime or suspicious activity Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM, please contact the Essex County Sheriff’s Department at (802) 676-3500.

For incidents occurring outside of those business hours, please contact the Vermont State Police at (802) 334-8881.
