PART-TIME WATER & WASTEWATER SYSTEMS POSITION
Town of Canaan, Vermont
The Town of Canaan is accepting applications for a part-time Water and Wastewater Systems employee. This is a year-round position expected to average approximately 24–30 hours per week.
This position may be filled independently or combined with the Town’s part-time Highway and General Maintenance position for a qualified applicant interested in working across both departments. Hours and duties for a combined position would be coordinated according to departmental and seasonal needs.
Job Summary
The employee performs technical and general maintenance work involving the operation of the Town’s water and wastewater treatment facilities and related systems.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities;
- Recording operational data and performing routine laboratory tests and analyses;
- Maintaining and repairing water distribution and wastewater collection systems;
- Maintaining water mains, sewer lines, fire hydrants, meters, and related equipment;
- Maintaining the Town’s septage-receiving station;
- Performing minor mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and equipment repairs;
- Assisting with snow removal, mowing, trimming, and maintenance of Town buildings and grounds; and
- Assisting other Town departments when necessary.
Weekend facility coverage is required on a rotating basis. The employee must also be available to respond to system alarms and emergencies outside regular working hours.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess basic knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical systems. They must be able to record information accurately, perform routine testing, follow established operating procedures, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Town departments, regulatory agencies, and the public.
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- At least one year of related water, wastewater, mechanical, plumbing, utility, or maintenance experience—or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record;
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions; and
- Willingness to obtain the licenses and training required for the position.
Candidates holding applicable Vermont Water Supply and Wastewater System Operator certifications, including Class 3 treatment, Class D distribution, and Grade 1 wastewater treatment credentials, are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference may be given to applicants with water distribution experience; however, the Town is willing to train and assist the right candidate in obtaining the necessary licenses.
Compensation
Hourly wage will be commensurate with qualifications, licensure, and experience.
